Gillard defends My School index DAN HARRISON
January 30, 2010
THE Education Minister, Julia Gillard, has conceded the index used to group ''similar'' schools on her controversial My School website does not accurately reflect the student mix of some schools.
The Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage takes into account 16 variables that are proven to influence educational outcomes.

The index attracted criticism this week when the site launch revealed some unlikely groupings. According to the index, Concord West Public School is serving a student population statistically similar to the prestigious King's School Parramatta.
Ms Gillard said the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), which developed the My School site, had used other information to adjust the index values of some schools.
''The inner city of Melbourne is a good example of that,'' she said. ''[For example] Carlton is not a big area but it's got great wealth and great poverty living side by side. So ACARA knew that for a place like Carlton, they would need to go through another process in generating the … score.''
The Australian Education Union yesterday condemned newspapers in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra for using the data to publish ''damaging and misleading league tables''.
''It is a sad day for education in Australia,'' its federal president, Angelo Gavrielatos, said. |
