Intent to Claim
Note: You do not have to fill in a claim form for Newstart Allowance.
However, you must register an Intent to Claim for Newstart Allowance. This means you can get your payment from the earliest possible date.
To register an intent to claim you can:
send us an online message - A Customer Service Adviser will contact you to start the claiming process.
You can also:
call us on 13 2850
visit your nearest Centrelink Customer Service Centre.
If you cannot telephone us yourself, someone else can telephone Centrelink on your behalf, so you can register your intent to claim as soon as possible.
Your interview
When you have registered your intent to claim, a Centrelink Customer Service Adviser will contact you to ask you some questions relating to your circumstances to help assess your entitlement. This includes, for example, details of your income (and your partner's).
If you have worked in the last 12 months you will need to get an Employment Separation Certificate. We can help you get this from your ex-employer if you are having trouble obtaining it.
Centrelink will then advise you of the best way to complete your claim. This may be by a booked appointment or a walk-in appointment depending on the office you wish to attend.
We will also tell you if there are other documents and forms you need to provide. You will need to submit these within 14 days. The sooner we receive your documents, the sooner we can work out your entitlement.
Before your interview it is a good idea to read information you need to know about your claim for Newstart Allowance & Widow Allowance
At your interview
You will need to provide proof of identity, income and assets details and your Separation Certificate. You may also be required to enter into an Employment Pathway Plan.
We will advise you if you qualify for Newstart Allowance, when your payment starts and how much you will get.
If you disagree with a decision we make
You always have the right to appeal any decision made by Centrelink. |
