CALLAN Peterson
CALLAN Peterson describes himself as a critical reader.
The year four Belair Public student, 10, has been devouring books for as long as he can remember and isn’t afraid to point out when one has spelling errors, weak characters, a plot with holes or a nonsensical ending.
“I keep in mind that I’m not going to do that in my writing,” Callan said.
“If a book says ‘He leapt to the rescue and saved the day’ I want to know why did he save the day, how did he save the day and what made him want to save the day?
“I also like to note the other possible ways a character could have acted to make sense from a reader’s perspective.
“Sometimes books could be better and if you’re not thinking about that, then you read more bad books than good ones and get more bad writing techniques than good ones.”
Callan’s eye for detail has paid off, after he was named the best year four writer in NSW after receiving his category’s highest score in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools writing paper.
Schools can invite their students to sit papers in digital technologies, English, mathematics, science, spelling and writing.
Callan will receive his University of NSW ICAS medal at a ceremony on November 22.
“I was very surprised and it’s a wonderful feeling to be able to get this achievement,” he said.
“I was not hoping to come first, I just wanted to learn how to write better and see how I went.
“I’m more naturally inclined towards maths, so writing has only become a major focus this year.”
Students were given 30 minutes and asked to write a short narrative featuring either a campsite, river, train or library as the setting and a bunch of flowers, a bicycle or jacket as an object.
Callan’s One Thing tells the story of teen Dirk, who storms into a library looking for a video game and knocks over a vase of flowers, sending bookshelves toppling like dominoes throughout the room and one of Newton’s physics books on top of him.
“It’s Deadpool kind of humour – you want something bad to happen to characters who aren’t particularly pleasant,” he said.
“It has a circular ending – he’s sealed his own fate.
“It’s like a cylinder, there were no loose ends poking out like a dead battery – it was like new and packed some punch.”
Callan also received a high distinction – meaning he is in the top one per cent of participants – in science and digital technologies.
He didn’t sit the spelling competition, but is representing the Hunter at the Premier’s Spelling Bee final on November 2, and is still waiting for his results in English and maths. He wants to be an engineer.
Callan’s “very proud” mum Jenny said her son’s success had boosted his campaign to buy pet chickens.
