有人说Sidney Sheldon 是中国的金庸。有人说，这个称号太亏他了。对这种观点我不予置评。先来读本他的书 the memory of midnight.
先说说本书作品题目来由：
Sing me no songs of daylight, For the sun is the enemy of lovers Sing instead of shadows and darkness, And memories of midnight

所以第一次认识了Sappo.
萨福（Sappho，约前630或者612～约前592或者560），古希腊著名的女抒情诗人，一生写过不少情诗、婚歌、颂神诗、铭辞等。
约为二十多岁时，风华正茂，在莱斯波斯岛上她创办女子学校，教授诗歌、音乐、仪态，甚至美容和服饰。许多人慕名而来，贵族把自己的女儿送往该校。她喜欢这些年轻美丽的女孩，不仅教授她们诗歌与音乐，闲暇之余热情教授她们恋爱艺术。心中的诗情在朝夕相处中转化为深深的爱恋，使她与女学生们在那片芬芳之地上绽放出艳丽的同性之爱的花朵。从而使萨福的名字成为现代女同性之爱的象征.一般认为她出生于莱斯波斯岛（Lesbos）的一个贵族家庭。
现代英语Lesbian（女同性恋）一词就是来源于Lesbos（莱斯波斯岛）。她的许多诗篇都是对女学生学成离别或嫁为人妇时表达相思之情的赠诗。

作为中国人他书中的中国元素一向是我们非常注意的。
这部书，有中文版，中文版只有22万字。但是找遍了，都找不到关于前言描写中国部分的翻译。不知道是什么原因，描写的是49年的九龙。第一次知道九龙的来由及其居然译做Kowloon。

The Chinese had named it Gau-lung—nine dragons 九龙， NICE DRAGONS, 正如女儿听到故事中说龙井，就是dragon well,一样的惊奇。

The Taoist priest waiting for him looked like a figure from an ancient parchment, with a classic faded Oriental robe and a long, wispy white beard.
“Jou sahn.”
“Jou sahn.”
“Gei do chin?”
“Yat-chihn.”
“Jou.”
终于明白了，原来道士是Taoist . jou sahn, 大概就是抽签？ gei dou chin实在不明白是什么意思。 Yat-chinh是什么，也不懂了。
The priest closed his eyes in a silent prayer and began to shake the chim, the wooden cup filled with numbered prayer sticks. A stick fell out and the shaking ceased. In the silence, the Taoist priest consulted his chart and turned to his visitor. He spoke in halting English. “The gods say you will soon be rid of dangerous enemy.”
The man felt a pleasant jolt of surprise. He was too intelligent not to realize that the ancient art of chim was merely a superstition. And he was too intelligent to ignore it. Besides, there was another good-luck omen. Today was Agios Constantinous Day, his birthday.
“The gods have blessed you with good fung shui.” 上帝会用好风水保佑你的。
“Do jeh.”
“Hou wah.”
这说了整个道士抽签的过程。但是最后的 对话，“Do jeh."大概是多谢的意思？ Hou wah 是好哇？
看他写西班牙的作品，希腊的作品，出现这种词汇，通常直接略过，以为如果自己是当地人就能明白。这本书却颠覆了我对中文猜测的自信。哈哈。
