Dear Colleagues,
Re: Saving Jobs
Each day we hear the news from around the world that the economy is causing
organisations to shut their doors or shed further staff.
Our clients are directly affected and this is reflected in our job numbers and cargo
volume, which across AU / NZ are down by over 15-20%.
The board and I are continuing to work together to secure new business and work
with our existing customers to improve margins. Our cost reduction projects
continue internally to leverage on various opportunities in AU / NZ.
We are doing what we can, to retain as many positions as possible, within the
company. However, we need to take further action, and they include:
Overtime
• Effective 2nd March 2009 the company will no longer pay over time
• Overtime will only be paid where it is approved “up front” by a General
Manager or by a Board Member
• Overtime where appropriate and managed by your department managers
will be offered as Time in Lieu (i.e. time taken off during quieter times)
• Your Department Managers will work with you to manage rosters to
ensure your departments are covered and for the days in lieu to be taken.
Annual Leave and Long Service Leave
• Department Managers and Site Managers are working with all staff to
focus on those who have accumulated more than 20 days leave from the
previous years are taken. Staff need to make an effort to reduce leave
days considerably and as an absolute priority.
Part Time Work
• Our offer still stands for staff members to work on part time hours, this
maybe a 4 day work week, or every other week a four day work week etc.
All part time work needs to be coordinated with your manager and we will
guarantee this will be for a fixed term only i.e. 3, 6 months and no ones
entitlements, such as leave accrual etc will be disadvantaged.
Recruitment
• The recruitment freeze continues, positions which are not deemed
‘critical to the business’ at this time will be put on hold and or not
replaced, therefore bringing our headcount down.
Organisational changes/productivity increase
• Board Members will continue to work with their State Managers, Site
Managers and Corporate Departments to change organisational
structures to meet the down turn in volume’s and meet new customer
expectations.
Travel
• Only to be taken for necessary customer visits and/or training and
workshops
• Lunch/coffees or drinks while travelling, are to be paid for by individual
(breakfast and dinner for overnight stays will be covered by the company)
General Spending
• All new major investments are on hold
• Discretionary spending must stop, including:
o All Gifts/Flowers
o Stationery must be signed off by senior manager
• Customer entertainment including lunches/dinners are to be kept to an
absolute minimum, and signed off by General Managers or Directors
• Taxis – if possible share with other staff members or car pool to
destination if this is a cheaper option
• We are switching suppliers eg. stationery, telecommunications, temp
labour hire etc so we can reduce our purchasing costs. (separate
announcements will be sent out in due course), however, all staff can do
their bit such as recycling, re-use items in office, minimise printing, save
energy etc
Ladies and Gentlemen, these are difficult times for our global organisation. If you
are not sure about any of the above, please contact the CEO’s office.
We believe that we will get through this year, and fortunately we have major
projects taking off later in the year. With everyone’s support we believe that this
company will be stronger for future growth in 2010 and beyond.
Thank you for your continued support.
