One hour is a bit too much for most kid. For this age, he is doing quite well. What the teacher said is quite normal. It does not mean the learning is easier without frequently doing exam. Normally this type of teacher pays more attention to develop student's basic skills.
My son's Russian violin teacher said the same thing to me. But he pays a lot more attention on his technical skills. My son's progress does not seem to be great since we started with him a few months ago as he has been asked to repeat the pieces week after week. As parents, we need to support his learning but also being patient.
Another thing I would suggest is to split his practice into multiple shorter sessions if he has difficulty to focus. Depending on the number of pieces given every week, if 1-2 per week, he should be able to get them done say in 40 mins. My son played the two books you mentioned. |
