What do I need to be aware of when teaching about sexuality?
Sexuality education is the responsibility of the community – including schools, parents and carers, government and non-government agencies and the media.
When planning and implementing a sexuality unit of work, it is important that teachers consider and tailor their unit to cater for:
differing cultural perceptions of what might be considered to be appropriately taught at a certain age
individual student needs and backgrounds.
Families are in the best position to teach their children values and attitudes towards sexuality. Teachers are best placed to deliver sexuality education in schools. They know the whole child, their age and stage of development, their family and their learning and support needs. Where external agencies are used in schools, the provider should merely supplement the sexuality education program, rather than replace the important role of the teacher.
Communicating with parents before the program
Consultation and partnerships with the school community should occur to ensure community views are reflected during the planning process. Including parents and carers in sexuality education as with any aspect of educational programs builds strong partnerships. Consultation and open communication with the school community also reduces the risk of misconceptions of the purpose and the content of sexuality education.
Parents can be informed via information letters, newsletters and information sessions.
Aspects of PDHPE such as sexuality education, drug education and child protection education can be considered sensitive. The Controversial Issues in Schools Policy Implementation Procedures provide direction for management of controversial issues in schools. They outline school’s responsibility in informing parents about school programs.
The school has a responsibility to inform parents, prior to the occasion, of the specific details of the program, so that parents have time to exercise their rights of withdrawing their child from a particular session on certain controversial issues. In this regard, a parent’s wish must be respected. Source: Controversial Issues in Schools Policy Implementation Procedures. |
