The focus here is on the pledge (holding their hands on their hearts and swearing to America); Presidents (they learn about them in every subject - even for 'math' they think the most important thing is knowing which President's head is on which coin, rather than whether the kids know how to count the coins... they also seem to think the US$ is the only currency in the world - on maths, they haven't done fractions at all, yet - they do these very old-fashioned work sheets and the kids add and subtract in the same way I learned to 30 years ago, whereas I know that In Australia at least they were teaching them to think creatively and look at the different ways they could reach a solution.)
We are in the heart of Silicon Valley here but the kids don't know how to use computers! My kids can't believe their computer lab - the other kids in their classes really aren't familiar with using them for research or communication or even typing. And this is a top elementary school!
They seem to rely a huge amount on parent volunteers and also outside tutoring. It's v.v.v. interesting.:) |
