Ad campaign divides the profession: Open letter from CPA President Mark Coughlin
It is extremely disappointing that the body with which we have stood shoulder to shoulder on many occasions to represent the interests of the profession has chosen to run an advertising campaign that smacks of divisiveness and self interest. I refer of course to The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.
Theirs is a silly campaign, especially when one of the most pressing matters facing the profession is how we deal with the shortage of skilled accountants, along with unqualified people practising as accountants. It would appear that the motivation for their ill-considered campaign is the credibility, recognition and overall success of our own CPA designation. Our brand is built on the integrity and professionalism of our members. If the ICAA wishes to replicate our successes they would do well to build the credibility of their own brand and not divide the profession by irrelevant comparisons.
Being more concerned with who gets the numbers rather than how is potentially damaging to the profession and the regard in which it is held. CPA Australia will not be diverted from the main game. Phone calls and emails from members – including ICAA members – received to date indicate strong disapproval of the campaign. As the largest finance, accounting and business body in Australia, I believe it is incumbent on us to behave responsibly not only on behalf of our members, but also that of the profession and the public interest.
CPA Australia has worked hard to offer an internationally recognised, world class professional program that includes such important elements as ethics, corporate governance, accounting, audit and business strategy. Our membership has grown from 92,000 in 2000 to 105,000 last year, of whom 23,000 are based overseas. This year, to better serve our international members, we have opened an office in Auckland, New Zealand and will soon open another in London.
Our sphere of influence, our ability to impact upon public policy, and our international reputation have been won by lifting the bar of the Australian accounting profession, not making irrelevant comparisons with other professional bodies. Silly distractions such as this do not reflect well upon the profession. When our next scheduled advertising campaign goes to air in a fortnight, it will remind you that we choose to highlight our strengths and the international portability of the CPA designation, not attempt to denigrate other members of the profession. To do that would be an irresponsible use of members’ funds.
