MANAGING ISSUES

Parents and carers are reminded that any issues arising between students at school are to be managed by
school staff.

Parents and carers are not to approach other children to sort out issues or to reprimand children. It is also highly
recommended that parents not approach other parents with complaints about their children. This can lead to
ongoing poor relationships and can get out of hand, leaving ill feeling long after the children have resolved their
differences and moved on.

Irrespective of their poor behaviour, all students have the right to feel safe at school. Being reprimanded by an
adult they don’t know can be frightening. It also leaves the adult open to allegations of inappropriate conduct.
Only DEC staff and approved volunteers are authorised to interact with students at school, and only DEC
teachers are authorised to apply discipline in line with school and DEC policy.

If you have a concern about something your child has reported to you, please contact the school so that we can
gather information and take the appropriate action, if necessary. One child’s perspective may not contain all of
the relevant information to give an accurate picture of events.

It is also important that students let teachers know of any significant issues that they are having at school. We
are then able to respond quickly and provide the appropriate support to make school the safe and happy place
we wish it to be.
