the only thing which most Western people "know" about China is a se of standardised shorthand metaphors chosen and endlessly repeated in order to establish and perpetuate a particular negative stereotype. As an example, virtually nobody in the West has a real appreciation of what "Totalitarian Communist" rule actually involves, other than that it must be really really bad. It isn't.
elsewhere in the Telegraph, right now, there is an article and attendant Comments about 18th century Chinese literature - the discussion revolves almost entirely around Tibet and Mao Zedong, because these are the only things which westernern audiences "know" about China. In fact, they don't "know" anything , but have simply been "led to believe"
If its any consolation, Chinese newspaper audiences appear to be every bit as bigoted, xenophobic and dismissive of things which they don't understand; in fact, the recent furore at the Olympics has told us far more about American insecurities than it has about Chinese athletes |
