A spectacular cross country course described by Andrew Hoy as having the toughest terrain he had ridden over seven Olympics proved too treacherous for the Australian equestrian team in the three day event at Greenwich Park, with two of the five riders eliminated after falling.
Australia began the day in second place behind Germany, but dropped to sixth and out of medal contention after its final rider, Clayton Fredericks, was dramatically dismounted.
The crowd have been fantastic and you just have to hope the horse responds well to the noise. It's just been amazing and we're so lucky to have this competition here in London. — Zara Phillips
"Everyone's shaking their heads at how it happened," team manager Brett Mace said. "There's not a lot you can say, but they still did a great job. The two that fell were riding very well, they didn't make mistakes at the fence, they slipped."
