Senior Network Engineer - VSAT Engineering

Optus operates fixed satellite services over Australia and surrounding regions for broadcast and VSAT services.

Optus' Satellite Engineering group is responsible for the design and build of all satellite infrastructure including satellites and earth stations. Within Satellite Engineering, VSAT Engineering is responsible for the design and implementation of all VSAT services. These responsibilities include: growth of existing VSAT platforms to meet product demands; selection of new VSAT platforms with new features for new Optus products; providing technical expertise to our customer facing business units on all technical matters relating to VSATs and satellite data network engineering; and automation of manually intensive processes to enable to Operations to support the growing network size.

This position is a technical position within VSAT engineering providing technical expertise in VSAT services over Optus' satellite fleet and other satellite systems. The position provides technical support for the design, purchase, build and integration of VSAT platforms into the Optus network as well as providing designs for associated VSAT terminals and customer data networks. Other activities include: capacity management; VSAT hub reconfigurations and upgrades; support vendor liaison; trouble shooting as well as some project management support.

As part of the VSAT Engineering team this position will work with technical specialists and support other VSAT team members in the establishment of customer data networks. This position requires some liaison with Optus' customers and ability to suitability represent Optus on technical matters. VSAT Engineering also provides technical input into Optus' Sales, Marketing and Operations groups as well as other engineering disciplines and again this position requires an ability to suitably represent VSAT Engineering with these internal Optus groups.

Your key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•Ensure VSAT IP Infrastructure are built, documented, integrated and handed over to VSAT Operations
•Prepare Technical Design Packages for customers
•Prepare capacity reports showing available growth capacity of the IP Infrastructure supporting the VSAT Hubs
•Assist in the design of the VSAT Hubs to deliver adequate network robustness for VSAT services
•Provide technical input to product development process and prepare technical design documents
•Provide test plans and reports for trial customers
•Prepare and issue design documentation for VSAT IP Infrastructure platforms, projects and handover
•Support Tier 3 service investigations and meet with customer to explain technical issues and solutions
The major challenge of this role will be to keep abreast of latest VSAT technologies and enhanced software packages with the objectives of increasing VSAT marketing opportunities and sales.

To meet this challenge and be effective in this role you will be able to demonstrate:

•Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Communications Engineering
•Extensive experience in telecommunications industry
•Good knowledge of VSAT network technology
•IP infrastructure knowledge and hands on experience (eg routers, switches, servers etc)
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•Proven problem solving skills
•Able to work under pressure
•Must be able to work in a team environment
•Flexibility to work effectively and efficiently in a changing work environment
•In depth knowledge of Microsoft PC applications
•Broad knowledge of Satellite engineering
•Hands on experience with VSAT platforms
•General software development skills and knowledge including scoping, testing and maintenance
•High Level Satellite RF Experience
•Project Management skills
