this is abit late, but anyway, it should be relevant for alot of people here.
in the recent 2011 Federal budget, government announced a $56.4m plan over four years in the area of GST REFUND INVESTIGATION. this will means even for small business owners, if you GST refund is significant, your BAS' will be delayed and quite likely be subjected to review. in the recent months, we have already seen alot of delays in issuing refunds. As accountants, we urge tax payers to keep better records than ever in case of a GST review. the ATO has allocated more staff in the GST fraud investigation area.
if your BAS is selected for review, you must be able to provide valid tax invoice, payment evidence along with other documents to support your claims, tax payers who continuously report losses and claiming small gst refunds every quarterly are also facing greater risk than ever.
