Intel flaw delays new MacBook Pros until April, maybe June
Intel launched its next-gen Sandy Bridge processor at CES 2011 in January promising high-quality video gaming performance without a separate processor. Then yesterday Intel announced that the processor has a major design flaw which could cost upwards of $1 billion to fix.
Intel spokesman told AppleInsider that the design error with its Intel 6 Series chipsets (code-named Cougar Point) will affect both desktop and mobile Sandy Bridge chipsets.
This is potentially really bad news if you’ve been waiting on the sideline for a new MacBook Pro. The new MBP refresh has been rumored to take queues from its wildly-successful little brother, the MacBook Air (including its thin, wedge design, SSD, no optical, etc.)
Some even suggest that the new MBP could ship with Apple’s 10 Gbps LightPeak technology to make it more attractive to professional users. LightPeak would also help differentiate the MBP from the smaller and lighter MacBook Air and help it compete with PCs sporting USB 3.0 — which pokes along at 3.2 Gbps.
The problem is that Apple was believed to be testing the MBP successor with the now-tainted Intel Sandy Bridge chips. AI notes that the problem has been resolved, but…:
Intel has begun manufacturing a new version of Cougar Point which resolves the issue, but none of those corrected chipsets will begin shipping in any capacity until the end of February at the earliest, and Intel said it doesn’t anticipate meeting volume commitments until sometime in April.
Make no mistake about it, Apple is a high-volume customer and although it’s undoubtedly sampling the new Intel chips almost immediately, Intel has clearly stated that volume commitments won’t happen until “sometime in April.”
AppleInsider estimates that it could take anywhere from another 6-10 weeks from April until the new chips to find their way into MacBooks and then into consumer’s hands.
We could be looking at June or July folks.
