Having a sister makes you happier - study
HAVING a sister can make you happy and healthy because they protect you from a range of negative emotions, a new study claims.
Researchers from Brigham Young University in Utah found that people growing up with at least one girl in the family were protected from feeling lonely, unloved, guilty and self-conscious.
Sisters, whether older or younger, are best at preventing depression and guarding against delinquency because girls are better at talking about problems and are more likely to take on a role of carer, researchers found.
Dr Laura Padilla-Walker, lead author on the research, said: “Siblings matter even more than parents do in terms of promoting being kind to others and being generous.”
The study, published in the Journal of Family Psychology, looked at more than 395 families with more than one child, at least one of whom was an adolescent between 10 and 14 years old.
While parents rightly worried about endless fighting between siblings, this was good because through arguments and hostility children learn how to make up and regain control of their emotions - skills that equip them well for life.
Dr Padilla-Walker added: “For parents of younger kids, the message is to encourage sibling affection. Once they get to adolescence it is going to be a big protective factor.
“An absence of affection seems to be a bigger problem than high levels of conflict.”
