I've been told by the BMW app group that some functionality is not enabled because I'm missing this service pack on my vehicle, but my dealer service advisor isn't sure what that means.

BMW app group is right. Dealers usually knows nothing about all this.
I think what you have on the 23 is Service Pack 18 though, not even 21. The most recent one is 23, which only 2024MY X7 is getting. Service pack generally is the sum of a given release for the main hardware and modules in a vehicle managed my the ECU/PCM and headunits. Usually the service pack gets upgraded from generation to another or LCI. There has been new features released in the past 1-2 years (new steering wheel, interior camera, App features, Highway assist, upgraded modules, AR headunits, faster processing time, exterior camera recording features, etc) that the 2019-22 and 23 LCI X7s are not getting because they all run on the same older service pack released came on 2019 X7 (this service pack tech was designed in 2017). The newer 2024 X7s are getting the new and most recent service pack, and hence some of the new features are compatible (if BMW decides later to add them via software change or hardware retrofit), and some new features in the futures can be made available, and for now some of the current available features were already made available to it (such as highway-assist, AR in the main driver headunit, etc). ID8.5 and ID9 is still a matter of debate, but it's one of those other gray areas around service packs too. Keep in mind that there is a difference between BMW deciding to push something to everyone, versus the applicability of the vehicle SP with the features themselves
It's a complicated subject but hope that helps. BMW 7-series has the new service pack since 2022 debut. BMW iX has the new service pack since Q4 2021. X7 2023 was released with the older SP on pre-LCI since 2019 with tech designed and debuted in 2017/2018, but the 2024 model year is getting the new service pack. 2023 BMW i4 consumers were are screwed, as it came with the older SP on the new ID8 vehicles and you can see a few complaining about not getting some features to work and some EV stuff to function as they thought it would. |
