After a recent report of a person in Queensland being fined $44.00 for leaving his window in his car down a couple of inches whilst he went into a shop as he didn’t want the car to be hot when he and his 3 year old child got back into it, we thought we would provide a list of slightly unusual or unknown nsw road rules –
Texting on a hand-held mobile phone while driving is illegal. It is one of the more known nsw road rules. Handling your phone while using it as a navigation device is also an offence which can incur a $298.00 fine and loss of three demerit points.
If you get caught using a hand held mobile phone in a school zone the fine is $397.00 and loss of four demerit points.
If your car is parked legally and safely off the road (ie. not stationary at lights or in slow-moving traffic) but the engine is still running, it is ok to use a mobile phone in NSW.
Splashing a bus passenger with mud after driving through a puddle can incur a fine of $165.00.
Running an orange traffic light will cost you $397.00 and loss of three demerit points.
Failing to stop at a stop sign will incur a $298.00 fine and loss of three demerit points in NSW. “The car must come to a complete stop, the wheels must stop moving”.
Stopping in a “no stopping” zone will cost you $232.00 ($298.00 and two demerit points in a school zone). Taxis are exempt from no-stopping zones in the CBD if dropping off or picking up passengers.
Double parking in a school zone will incur a $298.00 fine and loss of two demerit points in NSW.
Parking on a footpath – $99.00 fine.
A toot of the horn and a wave goodbye out the window as you drive down the street could cost you almost $600.00 and three demerit points in NSW – $298.00 for the “illegal use of a warning device”, and a further $298.00 fine (and three demerit points) for having a “limb protrude” from the car.
A passenger can also be issued a ticket for having a part of his or her body outside a window of a moving car – $298.00 but no demerit points.
A passenger failing to wear a seat belt will cost the driver a $298.00 fine and a loss of three demerit points. In NSW, if two passengers are unbelted the fine and the demerit points double. Four passengers are unbelted: $1258.00 fine and loss of six demerit points.
Failing to wear a seatbelt correctly will cost you $298.00 and a loss of three demerit points.
Using an incorrectly fitted or non-approved child seat is a $298.00 fine and loss of three demerit points in NSW.
Taxi drivers are exempt from wearing seatbelts on the grounds of personal security and cannot be fined if infants are not in a child restraint.
Driving at night with your headlights off is a $99.00 fine and one demerit point in NSW. Failing to dip your high beams attracts the same penalty.
Drivers will incur a $99.00 fine for using fog lights “unless in fog or other hazardous weather reducing visibility”.
Failing to produce a driver’s license – $99.00 fine.
A supervising driver could be fined $99.00 for “failing to prevent a traffic breach” when supervising a learner driver (eg. where the learner driver runs a stop sign or red light, or changes lanes into the path of another car).
Reversing along a one-way street – $232.00 fine and loss of two demerit points.
In NSW, it is a $1556.00 fine and loss of nine demerit points to use a radar detector “or speed evasion device”, another $1556.00 ticket to own, buy or sell such a device, and another $1556.00 fine for failing to surrender the device to police.
Drive an unregistered vehicle, drive an uninsured vehicle, or fail to pay road tax – $596.00 fine each, totaling $1788.00.
Altering or obscuring a car’s number plate – $397.00 fine.
It is an offense to leave your car unlocked, leave the key in the ignition or leave the windows open if you’re more than three meters away from your vehicle – $99.00 fine each.
Driving with a TV, DVD (or similar) displaying moving pictures in view of the driver – $298.00 fine and loss of three demerit points (or $397.00 and four demerit points if its in a school zone).
The driver of a car with a TV or DVD screen “likely to distract other drivers” can also be issued with a $298.00 fine (but no loss of demerit points).
Failing to keep left on a freeway (or a road with a speed limit of 90km/h or more) unless overtaking – $298.00 fine and loss of two demerit points.
“Unsafe overtaking” – $298.00 fine and loss of two demerit points.
Speeding up while being over taken is a $298.00 fine and loss of three demerit points.
Failing to give way to an emergency vehicle – $397.00 fine and loss of three demerit points.
Failing to indicate when merging – $165.00 fine and loss of two demerit points.
Failure to indicate when leaving a roundabout – $165.00 fine and loss of two demerit points.
Opening a door on a passing cyclist – $298.00 fine.
It is now illegal to carry more occupants than a car was designed to carry – $298.00 fine and loss of three demerit points.
Driving with an animal on your lap – $397.00 fine and loss of three demerit points.
Leading an animal while riding a bicycle – $66.00 fine.
Riding a bicycle “furiously or recklessly” – $66.00 fine.
Running a red light on a bicycle – $66.00 fine.
It is illegal for a car to “emit offensive noise” from a stereo – $150.00 fine.
Pedestrians who don’t cross the road quickly enough – or who cross on a red signal – can incur a $66.00 fine.
