Hi Canu999, you seem not know much about finance though. Then I guess it's hard to get into top PhD program in top AU schools. But don't take my word, I don't know much about you. All these information is on the internet. M&A is merger & acquisition. Derivative pricing and risk management is career for PhD in this area though.
There are so many topics in each field as long as you type it in google. You have to come up with a meaningful research topic yourself, which is itself a big research topic.
"good student" means good research ability, good research paper, lots of experience, etc. I guess that's just the meaning you can think about. Try to do as much work experience as you can, if you have to work outside uni after graduation.
