Beside common ABO RBC type (A, B, AB, O), there is also Rh type (positive or negative).
Rh negative is not common in Chinese Han population, about 0.03%, that is 99.97% of Han Chinese are Rh positive.
However, in Caucasian (European white), about 15% population are Rh negative.
For a pregnant woman who is Rh negative, if her baby has a Rh positive blood group (it will be likely if the father of the child is Chinese), there is a risk that the pregnant woman becomes isoimmunised - produce antibody attack Rh positive red blood cells and cause baby anaemia. Most severe at next pregnancy.
To prevent isoimmunisation, your doctor will give you Anti-D injection at 28 weeks and 34 weeks and after birth or if you have any vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. With Anti-D injections, 98% isoimmunisation can be provented. |
