This usually caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.
The carpal tunnel - a narrow, rigid passageway, formed by ligaments and bones at the base of the hand - houses the median nerve and tendons. The median nerve controls sensations of thumb, index, middle fingers (not the little finger), as well as the movement of some small muscles that control the fingers and thumb. Sometimes, thickening from irritated tendons or other swelling (e.g fluid retention during pregnancy) narrows the tunnel and causes the median nerve to be compressed. This result numbness, sometime pain or weakness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. These symptoms often worse at night due to position of the hands/wrists. You can try to immobilise the wrist in a splint to avoid twisting or bending.
In most cases, the symptom will subside a couple of weeks after delivery.
