Just had a short trip to NZ. My task was to check worker's condition in a food processing factory.
The minium pay is NZ$12 before 1 April 2009. Super is not mandatory. If you choose 'KIWI Saver (NZ super program), then the employer pays 1% and emplyee pays 4% of their gross income into super.
There are lots of seasonal work, but seasonal workers' pay is quite bad. Even the seasonal worker works for the same emplyer for over 10 years, they won't get adequate leave entitlement. Becuase every season, they sign a new emplyment contract, each contract periosd is less than 3.5 month. No government regulation protect those poor seasonal worker's benefit. No union, no maximun working hrs defined in regulation, only a guidline which is 48hrs pw but the regulation does not define what if the max. working hrs exceed 48hrs.
many workers work 12hrs a day, 7 days a week. The pay rate for the extra 4 hrs is same as the normal 8 hrs. What they get is 8% on top of gross income to compensate the public holidays when they terminate the employment at the end of the season.
