Eliminates the risks of phimosis, which affects 1 in 10 older boys and men. This is when the foreskin becomes tight and cannot be pulled back fully so cleaning and urinating becomes difficult.
Reduces by 10-fold the risk of urinary tract infection in infants. The risk is only 1 in 500 in circumcised boys. Frequent urinary tract infections can cause kidney inflammation and disease and the risk in uncircumcised boys is 1 in 50.
Reduces by 3-fold the risk of inflammation and infection of the skin of the penis. This occurs in 1 in 10 uncircumcised men and the risk is increased to 1 in 3 if the uncircumcised man is a diabetic.
Over 20-fold decrease in the risk of invasive penile cancer which affects about 1 in 1000 uncircumcised men often requiring penile amputation.
Uncircumcised men have a 15-60% increased risk of prostate cancer, which affects 1 in 6 men.
Reduces by over 3-fold the risk of HIV (AIDS), during sex with an infected woman. HIV virus enters via the inner lining of the foreskin of a healthy penis but can also infect via sores anywhere on the penis.
Circumcision affords substantial protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as high risk papilloma (wart) virus, syphilis, trichomonas and thrush.
Circumcision reduces by up to 5-fold the risk of the man's female partner being infected by chlamydia or getting cervical cancer. The load of infectious bacteria and viruses that accumulate under the foreskin is delivered into the female genital tract during sex.
Furthermore a woman's risk of bacterial vaginosis, genital herpes and other STI's, including HIV, is also lower if the male partner is circumcised.
If not circumcised soon after birth, up to 10% of males will later require it for medical reasons. By doing it earlier, general anaesthetic and sutures are avoided.
Credible research shows that most women prefer the appearance of the circumcised penis. They also prefer it for sexual activity. Hygiene is one reason.
Most research shows sexual function, sensitivity and satisfaction are the same or better after circumcision. |
