- put at ease; elicit overall self-rating; ask for strength and weaknesses;
- recognize strengths
- list areas of improvements (backed up by evidence); ask for reasons and listen silently
- what can we do about these causes? (focus on solving problems, not finding faults)
- keep record; set new goals and improvement plans (specific actions if needed)
