SCIENCE-FICTION epic Avatar has topped the North American box office for the seventh week running, taking in $US30 million ($33.53 million) one week after it broke the all time ticket sales record set by Titanic, weekend estimates showed overnight. Director James Cameron's groundbreaking 3-D spectacular raised its North American takings to $US594.5 million ($664.54 million). Its international ticket sales on Tuesday broke the $US1.841 billion ($A2.06 billion) set by Titanic, also made by Cameron. Opening this weekend in second place was revenge thriller Edge of Darkness, featuring Mel Gibson's first screen appearance since 2002. It raked in $US17.1 million ($19.11 million). Romantic comedy When in Rome, starring Kristen Bell as a New Yorker seeking love in the Eternal City, opened in third place, taking in $US12 million ($13.41 million). Dwayne Johnson comedy The Tooth Fairy, retained fourth place in its second week of showing, with $US10 million ($11.18 million) in box office receipts, with $US26.1 million ($29.18 million) in total. Denzel Washington's Book of Eli, an action movie also set in a post-apocalyptic world took in $US8.7 million ($A9.73 million) for fifth place and $US74.3 million ($A83.05 million) for its three-week run. Post-apocalyptic thriller Legion, starring Dennis Quaid, fell from second to sixth place with $US6.8 million ($7.6 million) and a two-week total of $US28.6 million ($31.97 million). Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones made $US4.7 million ($5.25 million) for seventh place and a total haul of $US38 million ($42.48 million) since it opened eight weeks ago. In eighth place was Sherlock Holmes with $US4.5 million ($5.03 million). The high-octane take on the adventures of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary London detective, played by Robert Downey Junior, has taken $US197.6 million ($220.88 million) in six weeks. Rounding out the top 10 were family film Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which added another $US4.0 million ($4.47 million) to its six-week haul of $US209.3 million ($233.96 million). Bringing up the rear in 10th place was love triangle comedy It's Complicated, starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, taking $US3.7 million ($4.14 million) for a six-week total of $US104 million ($116.25 million).
