Assessment event 1 Case study: Team Performance Plan
Read the case study below and complete the following tasks.
Scenario
Graham Sandler has just been promoted to team leader of the outdoor furnishing department of the large department
store where he works. His manager has asked him to investigate the poor performance of the department, as sales were
below budget.
understanding of the frequency and type of complaints from external customers. His analysis found the most common
complaints were late delivery of furniture, so he investigated this further. He found that often the manufacturer was late
with deliveries as a result of delays in supply of raw materials to them. However, as there were no monitoring systems in
place to track the lead time manufacturers advised, staff in the department were not aware of the problem until a
customer rang to complain.
These findings indicated that there was no communication and seeking/sharing of information with internal staff in the
department or store and minimal relationship with suppliers. It also indicated a dilemma with external customers, where
customer delivery was a problem. Graham reported his findings to his manager who agreed to provide $10,000 from the
budget for a project to develop team effectiveness across the department. The project would focus on improving
relationships with internal customers and suppliers which would lead to improved service to external customers. Graham
hopes this will result in budget increases as well as motivating and invigorating his team. If successful in outdoor
furnishings the project may be rolled out to the entire store.
