AACo shareholder Joe Lewis lifts stake to 26pc
British Billionaire Joe Lewis has again increased his stake in the Australian Agricultural Company, with his Tavistock investment group now in command of 26 per cent of the nation’s biggest beef producer after its latest creep up the register.
Bahamas-based Mr Lewis, who also owns English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, was the primary backer of AACo’s $299 million capital raising last year.
AACo launched the raising to shore up its stretched balance sheet and fund construction of its $91 million Darwin abattoir, which will commence operation any day now.
According to a substantial shareholder notice lodged on Tuesday, Tavistock’s AA Trust has built its stake from 23 per cent in April to 26 per cent.
Tavistock’s interest has previously fuelled speculation of a takeover play and rumours of plots to break-up the company, which AACo has denied.
On Tuesday a Tavistock spokeswoman said the investment group is a supportive shareholder and welcomes the opportunity to increase its stake.
“We believe in the company, its management team, model and opportunities. We believe in the sector,” the spokeswoman said.
“We believe AACo’s current structure is appropriate and gives the company the greatest chance of ongoing success”.
