The Australian government has announced, as part of Budget 2013-14, that the Baby Bonus will no longer be available from 1 March 2014.
In its place, the government will make a one-off increase to the Family Tax Benefit Part A payment of $2,000, to be paid in the year following the birth or adoption of a first child (or each child in multiple births), and $1,000 for second or subsequent children. This will be paid as an initial payment of $500, with the remainder to be paid in fortnightly payments over a three month period.
As is currently the case, parents who make use of the Paid Parental Leave scheme will not be eligible for the additional payment under the Family Tax Benefit Part A.
There have also been some changes to the Paid Parental Leave scheme. Parents are now able to count their time on Government Paid Parental Leave as ‘work’ under the work test, making it easier for mothers who have children close together to be eligible for subsequent parental leave.
Currently, the Baby Bonus is an income tested payment of $5,000 per eligible child.
