Attended chatswood OC orientation this morning, jot down some notes and personal impressions below if interested and for my own reference:
- Very near Chatswood station, got overhead bridge so no danger of crossing Pacific Hwy.
- Principal Mr Dodds very warm and passionate, asking each and every student where they come from. Interestingly quite a lot from Forestville PS. Also three caucasian students from same private school. Altogether about 6-7 caucasians, 4-5 from India or similar, rest mostly China or Asia, total 30 students. Mr Dodds says 90% students in Chatswood from Asia backgrounds.
- 7-8 students from own school got accepted into OC.
- Altogether year 5 has four classes including OC.
- same syllabus as normal classes, no differetiation. Only difference is that OC class is taught with more depth. So that means advanced learning is limited, although Deputy Principal does mention some students may study year 7 or 8 maths but that seems all.
- a movie by some current student is very funny and interesting, probably standout in the whole orientation.
- String orchestra conductor is also Sharon Lee so that's why also very good.
- every student in school learns mandarin.
- 67 students got into selective high this year. Most students in OC got into selective high, but some chooses other school due to extra curricular pursuits.
- does not encourage or discourage coaching, but should not affect normal study.
- School mark for selective high based on assessments including Naplan and other term assessments, all objective. That's another reason parents should not do excessive coaching as this might affect their child's score. Sounds like lots of people in Chatswood do coaching so even principal wants to emphasize this. Deputy Principal also mentions that balanced life is more important than putting all efforts in coaching and studying as it is always the students who are more relaxed and refreshed perform the best.
- Year 5 teacher is Mr Gilbert; year 6 currently Ms Stein Holmes but will change to Mr Koo who does not look too experienced or too good (my opinion only!). Interesting note Mr Koo always sits or stands away from other teachers and principle.
- Overall no particular standout program for OC, just perhaps syllabus enrichment. |
