August is Dental Health Month for dogs and cats at the University of Melbourne's Veterinary Hospital in Werribee. That means free dental checks (by appointment – limited appointments per day) for the whole month of August.
Why is this such an important initiative? Because periodontal disease is the most common problem our pets face. Around 80% of adult animals have some form of dental disease and this becomes more severe with age.
“Tartar (the build-up of plaque) means bacteria in the mouth that can easily multiply and then enter the bloodstream. This can cause serious illness, not just in the mouth (such as gingivitis), but also in the heart and kidneys,” says Dr Leonie Richards, Head of the General Practice from the Veterinary Hospital.
“Having your pet's teeth checked annually and professionally cleaned is the best way to deal with tartar. Diet, brushing and dental chew toys can also help prevent build-up, and for dogs who don't tolerate brushing there are even sprays and water additives,” adds Dr Richards. Dental checks are encouraged every six to 12 months.

Poor dental health can cause your pet pain and discomfort. Left unchecked, it can lead to more serious health issues so it is important to have regular check-ups to prevent any deterioration. If your pet is experiencing oral disease it may change their behaviour. In dogs, this can present as a change in appetite, excessive drooling, or they may become less active and have excessive bad breath.
As part of the FREE dental checks at Best Friends, The Our Vet™ veterinarian or a vet nurse will examine the mouth and teeth of your dog and rate their mouth from 1 (healthy) - 5 (extreme periodontal disease). A FREE VetMap report will be ready for you to take home which documents our findings specific to your dog and has clear care recommendations. Part of the recommendation may include a Prescription Diet formulae or a preventative dental care formulae.
Prevention is always better than a cure, so make sure you book your dog in for their groom during Dental Month to take advantage of this offer.
