SUMMARY: Acetone is a ketone widely used as an industrial organic solvent and
commonly found in paints and nail varnish remover.
As with all chemicals, unnecessary exposure to acetone should be avoided.
However, where occupational exposure is unavoidable, precautions should be taken
to ensure that exposure is well within the recommended exposure limits and not
associated with toxic symptoms.
Prolonged maternal exposure to organic solvents such as acetone during
pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage and low birth weight but there is no
clear evidence for an increased risk of fetal malformations. Chronic exposure to
high concentrations of acetone may decrease fertility.
Data following acute exposure are limited. However, in the absence of severe
maternal toxicity the risk of fetal toxicity appears to be no greater than those for the
general population. Inadvertent exposure at any stage of pregnancy would not
usually be regarded as medical grounds for termination of pregnancy or any
additional fetal monitoring. |
