Nokia to sell Lumia 710 from March
NOKIA is out to recapture a chunk of the feature phone market by selling its cheap Lumia 710 Windows smartphone in Australia.
Nokia managing director for Australia and New Zealand Chris Carr said the Lumia 710 would sell in Australia from March for $379 outright, alongside its up-market cousin, the Lumia 800.
Nokia worldwide is banking on the Lumia 800 and 710 turning the company’s fortunes around.
The company’s share of both the smartphone and feature phone markets has plummeted in the face of competition from the iPhone and phones with the Google's Android operating platform.
The Lumia 710 and 800 are the first Nokia phones to come with the Windows Phone 7 operating system, and represent the parting of the ways with its aged and out-of-date Symbian operating system used on previous Nokia smartphones.
The Lumia 710 is not as stylish as the pencil-thin Lumia 800, which as a high-end designer phone, looks like Nokia’s MeeGo operating system N9 smartphone. The Lumia 800 will retail at $699.
The Lumia 710 has the same 1.4 Gigahertz single core processor and similarly sized 3.7 inch screen found on the Lumia 800, but suffers memory wise with only 8GB of internal storage and no SD card slot.
However Nokia says both have access to 25 Gigabytes of cloud storage through Microsoft SkyDrive.
Although the Lumia 710 has a 5 rather than 8 megapixel back-facing camera, having the Windows 7 Phone operating system puts it in a competitive position with similar smartphones.
Apple’s iPhone 3GS, a likely rival of the Lumia 710 also with 8GB of memory, sells for $499 unlocked.
The Lumia 800 will be available through all Australia carriers while the 710 will sell through Optus and Virgin Mobile, as well as retail outlets.
Microsoft director consumer channels group David Mclean said around 60,000 apps were now available in the Windows Phone Marketplace.
Nokia Music – a library of 15 million tracks, Nokia Mix Radio – a streaming music service, Nokia Drive – a turn-by-turn navigation system, and Nokia maps are among app offerings.
Mix Radio includes the ability to cache up to four playlists for offline use, such as on planes.
There’s also access to Xbox Live and trial versions of games suitable for small-screen use.
Nokia had no information on the eventual availability of the 4G LTE-capable Lumia 900 in Australia.
