Australian media tablet sales accelerate in first half 2011
Sydney, 14th June 2011 – In a study released today, Telsyte has increased its market forecasts for media tablet sales in Australia to almost 1.2 million units for calendar year 2011, driven by continued strong demand from consumers and business segments.
“Although many PC and hardware vendors have been holding off releasing products in the first half of this year, most are now quickly launching products to meet the shift in demand from PCs to tablets” Telsyte Research Director Foad Fadaghi says.
Media tablet unit sales in the first five months of this year have already exceeded 2010 figures.
With the launch of the iPad 2 in March this year, Apple has cemented itself as the market leader. In 2011, Telsyte estimates iOS (Apple) will retain 71% market share, with Android, QNX (Blackberry) and WebOS (HP) making up the rest of the market.
Telsyte recognises that Android devices are likely to lead in features such as cameras, quad core processors, 3D video and more connectivity options.
However, Telsyte believes Android will remain behind in terms of applications for at least the next 12 months.
Telsyte has identified the need for Android manufacturers to reduce prices to more effectively compete against Apple.
Although expected to make a big splash when launched, Microsoft’s Windows 8 tablet is not expected until 2012. For some of Microsoft’s partners it comes a little too late as most have already adopted Google’s Android platform.
For telcos, marketing media tablets similar to smartphones has not been successful. Telsyte believes consumers prefer a shared cap between smartphones and tablets, rather than standalone tablet plans. Currently the majority of users on 3G-enabled tablets prefer to connect via pre-paid SIMs when outside of a WiFi zone. Telsyte believes a shared cap approach for carriers will encourage loyalty and allow for the effective up selling of data services.
Telstra’s recent acquisition of the AFL media rights on mobile devices signifies a growing market opportunity to stream video content to media tablets. Similar to Pay TV, Telsyte estimates that up to 30% of the market might be willing to pay for streaming live content, with the rest of the audience potentially served through advertising business models.
Telsyte’s media tablet research brings together findings for vendors, telcos, media and business & government end users. The study covers the A to Z of the media tablet industry, covering over 30 companies including: ABC, Acer, Apple, Asus, Avaya, Cisco, Dell, Google, Fairfax, Fujitsu, HP, HTC, Huawei, Lenovo, LG, Microsoft, Motorola, News Limited, NEC, Optus, RIM, Samsung, Sensis, Sony, Telstra, Toshiba, VHA, Viewsonic and ZTE.
