Conversational English at Collins Street
Conversational English began in a modest way at Collins Street Baptist Church in 2004. An Indonesian medical graduate who was undertaking a Masters Degree attended services. It became apparent that she would appreciate some help with her English. Over the next two years we were able to provide this help and it was our joy to see her successfully complete her studies here. Others became aware of assistance to students being available so the service took on a life of its own.
Help to individual students led to a class being formed with one tutor. This has now been running for over four years on Tuesday mornings. Numbers have grown steadily and there are now five tutors, all with teaching qualifications. Students come from most of the Asian countries, but there have been others from France, Brazil, Hungary and Iran.
The emphasis is on Conversational English. The knowledge of English that the students bring with them varies greatly. However a variety of material is presented to help with reinforcing of grammar, developing vocabulary, pronunciation and English usage. In this way students’ needs are catered for.
A feature of the program is the mid-session coffee-break. Students find considerable pleasure in interacting and as English is the only language they have in common it is a golden opportunity to practice their skills on each other. The class is also an opportunity to be able to help students who may need information about finding their way around the city. Some even take advantage of the opportunity to email their writing to one of the tutors for editing.
Conversational English meets on Tuesdays between 10.30am and 12.30pm at Collins Street Baptist Church on level four. Contact the church office for more information. All welcome.
