China's anti-Aussie commentator gets World Cup call-up STEPHEN HUTCHEON

The Chinese football commentator who infamously launched an on-air tirade against the Socceroos after Italy's last-gasp victory during the 2006 World Cup will make an encore appearance in South Africa.

Four years ago, Huang Jianxiang abandoned his objectivity and started screaming into his microphone after Italy's Fabio Grosso milked a penalty in the last minute of normal time.

"Penalty! Penalty! Grosso's done it! Grosso's done it! Don't give the Australians any chance," he yelled as the Italian appeared to trip over Lucas Neill's sliding tackle on the edge of the goal box.

This week, Huang's face - which was made up to look like a native American (or maybe a Zulu) - appeared in Chinese newspaper ads promoting the World Cup video offerings of Sina, one of the country's leading web portals.

"Sina gives you 100 per cent original, authentic 2010 South Africa World Cup," the ad read. "Huang Jianxiang and Li Changpeng lead exclusive original commentating teams; 64 videos of 64 matches ..."

Huang, who was commentating for an audience of millions on the state-run CCTV during the 2006 tournament, continued with his rant as Francesco Totti converted the penalty and knocked Australia out of the tournament.

"Goooooal! Game over! Italy win! Beat the Socceroos! They do not fall in front of [Australia's coach Gus] Hiddink again! Italy the great! Italian left back the great! Long live Italy! Happy birthday to [Italian captain Paolo] Maldini!! Forza Italia!!"

Facing mounting criticism for his lack of professionalism after the game, the commentator was forced by his network to issue a written apology.

"I have attached too much personal feeling to the match of Italian versus Australia at the end of the game last night. I will apologise to those fans who express their dissatisfaction, opinion and criticism," Huang wrote.

But he also also admitted that he didn't like the Australians. "I was hoping they'd do badly here," he said.

He said the source of his antipathy towards the Socceroos stemmed from 1981 when China failed to reach the World Cup finals in Spain after they were beaten in a play off by New Zealand.

"It was a team just like Australia, all of whom were living and playing in England but with New Zealand passports. It still hurts ... "

Huang and CCTV parted company in late 2006.
