The authors’ final advice

1.        Be aware of your own ethnocentrism (民族优越感)
Try to become aware of the ways you put your own culture at the centre of your experience and judgment: Think about your attitudes to hierarchy, informality, gender differentiation, time and other values addressed in this book.

2.        Develop relationship

It is important to be seen as someone who is willing to engage with the people with who you work. The easiest way of doing this is to join your colleagues for after-work drinks or at other social situations. You can also develop relationships through such things as spending time with people during breaks. The important thing is to communicate with the people around you.

3.        Be willing to step down

Getting work in OZ generally means either starting your own biz or taking a job somewhat below your skill and experience level, at least at first.

4.        Network as much as you can

We strongly advise you to begin networking even before you arrive in Australia. Relationships are so central to the workplace experience of most Australians that securing an interview or job is significantly easier if you have already developed a network of people associated with your field. If you are already in Australia, try to set up ‘informational interviews’ in which you meet with people who have positions similar to those in which you are interested. Your primary purpose is to meet people, make connections and begin to develop your own network. Once you are employed, continuing to meet people and build your network remains very important.

5.        Prepare yourself for culture shock

It may not be pleasant, but they are perfectly normal. They are a sign that you are experiencing cultural difference and are still in the process of adapting to your new life. Prepare yourself for them and try to use them as an opportunity to learn about the specific aspect of OZ culture that is affecting you at the time.

6.        Have a sense of humor and give yourself time

Adapting to a new culture takes time, so don’t beat yourself up if things don’t go right at first. It might take one or two years before your really settle in, develop friendships and have the job you really want. As an OZ would say, give yourself a ‘fair go”. It’s also worth remembering that some day you might look back on some of your experiences as a new migrant and laugh. Remember that cultural differences, though perhaps painful at the time of discovery, can also be very funny. And most of all, pat yourself on the back for your courage and go out there and make it work for you.

Australian national cultures

此文章由 william.wangzy 原创或转贴,不代表本站立场和观点,版权归 oursteps.com.au 和作者 william.wangzy 所有!转贴必须注明作者、出处和本声明,并保持内容完整
First of all, OZ is an island country with a climate that favors coastal living. This fact affects not only residency, but many other aspects of OZ identity and culture. E.g, OZ culture tends to place high importance on the beach.

A second aspect of OZ’s geography that affects the nationa sensibility is the great distance between OZ and most other western countries. In the past, this distance created a fortress mentality, in which OZs looked to protect themselves from their closet neighbors in Asia and the Pacific while this fortress mentality has for many Australians been replaced by a more inclusive multiculturalism.

3. External focus means that many OZs see travel outside of the country generally, and a pilgrimage to their own or their parents’ homeland specifically, as a prerequisite for coming of age.

This external focus also means that Australians may consider their own culture to be inferior to the older cultures of their parents’ homelands. But this description may not be so apt (suitable) for a people who are also very patriotic and proud of their country’s athletic and entertainment exports on to the world stage.
