The cost for a private obstetric care is divided in three parts
1. blood tests and ultrasound fee
2. obestetrician's fee
3. hospital fee
If you have no private insurance but want to save some money.
For obstetrician fee, you may want to call around to find out their charge. There is big difference in fees between different obstetricians. The expensive one may not be the best. The busiest obstetrician may not be able to give you all the attention you need.
If you do not mind shared postnatal ward, you can choose an obstetricain who also doing public obstetrics and is able to admit his/her private patients in a public hospital. The cost (as a private patient) in a public hospital can be $2000-3000 less than that of a private hospital.
The blood tests and ultrasound cost is a less concern, as when you have paid for a private obstetrician, you have already reached the medicare safty net threshold. Then 80% of the out of pocket fee for ultrasound and blood test will be covered by Medicare. (if you pay the blood test and ultrasound first, you will get more back from Medicare for you obstetrician's fee). |
