no tie breaker rule in fifth set of a grand slam is actually a big improvement. previously, there is no tie breaker at all and players had to play to the end in every set. no tie breaker in fifth set introduces a lot of new factors into winning and losing which makes the match more exciting to watch.
federer did not play a great match, he played ok. i would even say its really a medicore performance by federer. he was not as focused as roddick that is how roddick got to break federer serve twice. he did only manage to get one break of roddick's serve in the very end. federer missed so many forehand and backhand slices in the match that demonstrates his decling form. He is not timing the ball as well as he used to, which is definitely a problem related to age.
also, federer is under enormous pressure to win last night to break sampras' record. he might not say this in interviews, but he knows when nadal comes back, and top players like murray, djokovic, del potro, roddick mature their game further, it will be very difficult for federer to be in another final let alone winning it. the only advantage he has now compared to before is that he certainly has no burden on his shoulders and can hit the ball more freely. |
