MESSAGE: LAUNCH OF THE AUSTRALIAN
CHINESE PROFESSIONALS ASSOCIATION

I warmly welcome the formation of the Australian Chinese Professionals Association Inc (ACPA). I am confident that the Association can make an important contribution in building the personal and commercial links between China and Australia that can help build prosperity in both nations.

Australia and China share a strong and growing bilateral relationship. China is our largest trading partner and our largest source of overseas students, and the global recession is only highlighting the growing importance of China to our economic future. Our economic relationship has grown rapidly as a result of China’s economic growth and the expanding range of commercial opportunities available for both our countries. Already, two-way trade with China reached $63.8 billion in 2007-08, a 17 per cent increase on 2006-07, and China accounts for 15 per cent of our merchandise export trade worth $26.9 billion. The potential for future expansion and collaboration is significant.

Organisations like ACPA play an important role in bringing together Chinese Australian professionals to share information and experience and in so doing further develop our already extensive trade relationship and people-to-people links. Drawn from a wide variety of national backgrounds, the Chinese Australian community has greatly enriched our multi-cultural society with its rich culture and industrious members for more than 150 years. The Chinese Australian community is certain to play an increasingly important role in the Asia-Pacific century ahead of us. On behalf of the Australian Government I wish all the members of the ACPA a successful launch and prosperous Year of the Ox.

MESSAGE FROM THE HON. NATHAN REES MP
Premier of NSW

I am very happy to send my best wishes for the inauguration of the Australian Chinese Professionals Association.

This will be a powerful group which, I am sure, will be able to achieve a great deal for its members, for New South Wales and for trade and cultural interaction with the Peoples Republic of China.

It will also be a mutual self help organisation that can only be of great value to our community because when we get the best out of our professionals we all benefit. I note with interest that one of the aims of the association is to acknowledge Australian Chinese professionals’ achievements and contributions to the Australian society.

This is long overdue because for many decades professional men and women of Chinese background have been quietly climbing the ladder of responsibility in many fields, including government, local government, the law and big business. They should be acknowledged by the broad community for their contribution to our success.

Some of those are precisely the same people now coming together to form the Australian Chinese Professional Association. I congratulate you all on forming this group and wish you every success in the months and years ahead.
