Why can’t I compare cars in different categories, such as a medium car and a small car?
ANCAP Safety Ratings are used to compare vehicles within the same vehicle category (i.e. small car vs. small car, SUV vs. SUV etc.). It is not appropriate to compare ANCAP safety ratings across vehicle categories, particularly if there is a large weight difference. Used Car Safety Ratings can be compared across categories, but cannot be compared to ANCAP ratings as they are calculated different and are not comparable.
Used Car Safety Ratings如下

Crashworthiness ratings estimate the risk of a driver being killed or seriously injured when involved
in a tow-away crash, to a degree of accuracy represented by the confidence limits of the rating in each
case.
The aggressivity measure considers the injury outcome to both drivers of other vehicles and unprotected road users including pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.
The total secondary safety index summarises the combined crashworthiness and aggressivity of a
vehicle in a way that best reflects the relative importance of each component in real world crash
circumstances.
