The University of Queensland (UQ) is the oldest university in Queensland, the fifth oldest in Australia and one of the Go8 "sandstone" universities. It has consistently rated as one of the top universities in Australia and the world for medicine (33rd in the world for medicine in the most recent QS World Rankings). With campuses in Brisbane, Ipswich and (possibly soon) the Sunshine Coast and clinical schools as far away as Brunei and New Orleans, UQ's school of medicine is perhaps the most internationally spread and this is reflected in the proportionally larger numbers of international students that attend UQ.
The university has attracted sharp criticism recently due to an incident of nepotism in which the Vice-Chancellor's daughter was given a place at the School of Medicine over the heads of 343 other applicants with higher admissions scores [1]. The university's subsequent failure to engage with the criticism has done little to repair the reputation of what is otherwise a world-class medical school.
