Almost 80 per cent of Chinese buyers can’t settle on the Australian apartments they have bought off the plan and wish they could walk away from the contracts, according to an expert on investment in Australian property.

Looking ahead in 2017, “Chinese investors still believe that Melbourne properties are worth buying compared with Beijing and Shanghai, if they can get their money out of China,” he said.
He forecast that as a result, house prices in eastern and southeastern suburbs should continue to rise this year, by 10 per cent to 15 per cent — boosted by a desire to be close to schools and universities.
Ms Yong said Australia-based Chinese buyers were better informed about local areas, “and are increasingly willing to invest in ‘non-Chinese’ suburbs in Melbourne, such as Fitzroy and Northcote”.

Simon Henry, chief executive of international property website Juwai, which focuses on Chinese buyers, expects 15 to 20 per cent growth in international purchases of Australian real estate this year compared to 2014.
