Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas is a love story written by the author of numerous bestsellers James Patterson. Yep, you heard me right, a love story by the famous thriller writer.
Katie is an editor with a New York publisher. She believes in true love and romance and is well known by her friends for not sleeping around. She fell in love with poet Matt almost at the first sight. So much in love was she that she even gave up her birth control. When she was about to tell Matt the exciting news of her pregnancy , the man ran away, leaving her only a diary written by a woman called Suzanne.
Suzanne was obviously a new mom and she addressed the diary to her baby Nicholas. In the diary she recorded how she escaped from big city to small town after a bad heart attack and an unhappy relationship, how she met Nicky’s father, how they fell in love with each other, how happy they were together and how lucky she felt she was to find her true love in life….. Most importantly, she pointed out that there are five balls in life, namely family, friends, health, integrity and work. While each of us has to juggle around the five balls, we got to remember that work is a rubber ball. You let it go and it will bounce back sometime later. All the other four are glass balls. You let anyone of them go and it would be broken and shattered.
It turned out that Nicholas’ father is Matt, the one Katie is in love with. So why on earth did the man with such a wonderful wife and baby start the relationship with Katie? Why did he run away leaving Katie the diary? It was most painful for Katie to read the story of another woman who at least used to be, probably still is, Matt’s heart and soul. She could only take a little bit every day. However, on the other hand, she couldn’t help reading on, wondering what happened to Suzanne, to her family. Neither could the readers.
Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas was partially based on true experience of the author. It was especially written for those who have loved, lost and loved again. In this book with simple yet beautiful English, the author has managed to convince us how much love can do to one’s life and how different life could be with or without love. Whilst we may never truly recover from losing beloved ones, life should still move on, with hope and love ahead. Being a renowned thriller writer, James Patterson reveals something total unimaginable towards the end of the book which is not only shocking but also adds heavily to the points he tries to make throughout the whole story.
I was initially attracted to JP by Honeymoon and Beach Road, his hot hits of 2005 & 2006 respectively. Both are such terrific stories that I found it hard to put the book down, wondering what is the unknown ahead. However I am overwhelmingly impressed and moved by Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas. Life could be fragile and cruel and what excuse is there not to treasure every moment spent with the loved ones? Do remember that health, family, friends and integrity are all glass balls. Take care of them as well as you can for once you let it go, it would be broken and shattered.
I highly recommend this book Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas, whether you are a fan of James Patterson or not. |
