Telstra 2G Network being discontinued
2G exitTelstra who we use to supply our mobile service will be closing its 2G network on 1st December 2016.
The 2G network (short for ‘second generation’) has been in operation for more than 20 years. It has now been superseded by the 3G and 4G networks meaning it is no longer suitable for today’s mobile users who need more from their mobile network.
What does this mean for you?
WhyMost of our customers will not be affected by this change.
Customers who have accessed the 2G network recently from a 2G device have already been contacted to let them know that they need to upgrade their handset. If you have already received that notification then you are receiving this notification in addition as you have multiple services on your account.
The rest of our customers who access the 3G network do not need to do anything.
Your handset should be compatible with 850 MHz.
If networkyou do not wish to replace your handset then you may not be able to use your ALDImobile service after 1st December 2016. You should also be aware that most other network providers in Australia are also planning to shut down their 2G network in the near future.
2G roaming
A very small number of our customers may occasionally switch onto the 2G network when there is no 3G coverage. This is called roaming on the 2G network, or is also known as 'fallback' to the 2G network when there is no 3G network available.
After 1st December, there will be no fallback to the 2G network which means you may not be able to use your handset in a small number of areas across Australia
Since the 2G network only accounts for a small percentage of network coverage outside of the 3G network footprint, the impact should be minimal.
You can find out more about our coverage by clicking here.
What about my SIM card?
There’s no need to worry about your SIM card as all ALDImobile SIM cards are 3G/4G compatible and do not need to be replaced.
What happens next?
next
We will continue to send reminders about the change to our customers so that they are informed well in advance of the switch off date of 1st December.
If you are unsure about the compatibility of your current handset, or the settings, you will need to contact your handset manufacturer to check this, ALDImobile is not able to assist with this information. |
