Libby just made the final of women’s 100m freestyle, arranged at Lane 8. She wouldn’t be there if Chinese athlete Pang was not disqualified.

I am not sure. Lisbel is her formal name on the official website. Maybe Libby is just a short name or a nickname?

Jone "was the hottest of hot favourites to win the gold medal, starting at $1.02 favourite. If you put $100 on her to win and she won, you would have won only $2."

Became really busy at lunch time. Missed the show. It is disappointing to see Jones lose. Was it a marginal wiin by the American girl?

It wasn't, apparently Soni got much better performance.

Trickett's loss was marginal one: 0.04 sec is one of the tinist gap I ve seen in 2008 Olympics. However, she should feel happy with that because she wouldn't be here in the final if China’s Jiaying Pang wasn't disqualified yesterday.

Leisel Jones struggled to breathe in the final stages of the 200 metre breaststroke.

She suffered the upset of the Beijing Olympics Games when she was overhauled and comprehensively beaten to the gold by American rival Rebecca Soni this morning at the Water Cube.

Jones, for so long the world's benchmark breaststroker as she set times that no rival could match  - not only saw her dreams of a 100 and 200 breaststroke double disappear on the last lap of this morning race, but also her world record of 2:20.54, which  has stood since 2006.

But this morning she had no answer for the 21-year-old Soni, who stuck with the Australian's world record pace through the first 150 metres before taking control on the last lap and surprisingly pulling away to win in 2:20.22, taking 0.32s off the previous world record.

Jones said after the race that she had struggled to breathe as she fell further behind on the final lap - a problem that also occurred at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

"I just (couldn't) breathe. I just dug so deep, I just really couldn't breathe that last 50. It happened after my world record at the Comm Games as well, so it's exactly the same, it's the same feeling,'' she said.

"I don't suffer from asthma. It's just purely digging deep and trying to work hard. I'm probably not really conscious of the breathing towards the end.''

"It was pretty difficult. I don't think about it when I'm swimming, that's probably why I get to the end and all of a sudden realise I've got to breathe again. I'm not really thinking about it. I'm just thinking about my stroke and holding it and keeping it together so I'm probably not really focused on breathing until I get to the end.
It was an incredible upset for Jones, based on her dominance of the breaststroke ranks since the disappointments of Athens four years ago. Coming into the Olympics she had been the owner of eight of the fastest 10 times in history over the four lap race.

Such dominance had her marked down as an almost certainty to collect her second gold of the meet and there had been no indicator earlier in the week when Jones brushed aside Soni and all other challengers to win the 100m breaststroke final and claim her maiden Olympic title.

However, Jones, who will be part of the 4x100 medley relay team that is hot favourite to win gold on the weekend, said there was no disappointment at coming up short.

"There's definitely no disappointment at all. (It's) probably a bit of a relief that this week is over,'' she said. ''Silver medal's still a silver medal at the Olympics. I'm still really happy with that. It has been a really long week and it's hard to get up and down, up and down but I'm still so pleased with a silver medal. I gave it everything, I couldn't have done anything more so I can't be disappointed with that. I dug really deep, she was just better on the day and you can't control that.''

"... I'm a bit older now so I guess I realise what it feels like so I'm quite happy with the week. It is a bit hard to go through these times but it's all learning and I'm so pleased I've gone through it. And I need to be composed, I'm 22 now, done it for eight years and I'm getting better each time so that's good and I couldn't have given it any more so I can't be disappointed.

But while Soni took more than two seconds off the previous best she been previously able to swim, Jones finished second in 2:22.05 - more than 1.5 seconds outside a time she posted two months ago - with Norwegian Sara Nordentam third in 2:23.02.

She said she had not been taken by surprise by Soni, who had risen to prominence last year when she won national titles in the breaststroke double just a year after having heart surgery.

"No, not really, she's a pretty good competitor anyway ... she showed that in the heats and semis as well,'' Jones said. ''It's the Olympic Games, people lift and people swim fast so it's good to see.

Soni retained her title in the 200 breaststroke at the American Olympic trials but was only handed a berth in the 100 breaststroke in Beijing when national champion Jessica Hardy tested positive for a banned substance during the trials. Soni went on to win silver behind Jones in the two-lap event.

''It feels great. It's been a long road to get here,'' Soni said. ''I can't believe what just happened.''

''When I was in front, I didn't realise I was beating Leisel. It was a good place to be.''
