SOME are going by bus, others by foot. Two days before the arrival in Canberra of the Olympic torch, protesters and torch "protectors" alike are mobilising.
Members of the Tibetan community of NSW yesterday began a 70-kilometre march from the town of Bungendore to the Chinese embassy in Canberra to highlight alleged Chinese human rights abuses.
"We are walking to Canberra in three days without food in a show of solidarity to Tibetans in Tibet who have been denied access to food and water and electricity," said spokesman Tenpa Dugdak.
The group is due in Canberra tomorrow night — in time for a candlelight vigil with local Tibetans — before the local leg of the torch relay on Thursday.
Meanwhile in Melbourne, La Trobe University student Xiaozheng Ma was also preparing to go to Canberra — not to protest, but to "protect" the torch. She is among hundreds of Chinese students expected to make the journey by overnight bus.
"We do not wish people to mix politics and the Olympics together," Ms Ma said. "We just want the Olympics to be the opportunity for China to demonstrate its economic progress to the world."
The students got organised in response to the fervent anti-China demonstrations that have followed the Olympic flame around the world, she said.
They did not wish for a repeat of the altercations that have been part of the global demonstrations. "We plan to protect the torch in a peaceful way."
Khim Chow, president of the Chinese Association of Victoria, said many Chinese Australians believed the Olympics should not be embroiled in politics.
Mrs Chow, who says her association is non-political and non-religious, said if China did well on the world stage, it reflected positively on Chinese people all over the world, and people became more understanding of Chinese culture.
Stephanie Hemelryk Donald, president of the Chinese Studies Association of Australia, said many of the young Chinese who would be going to Canberra to "defend" the torch were overseas students, while some would be Australian citizens. It was not surprising that they were loyal to China, she said.
"The award of the Olympic Games and the demonstration of the torch is saying China is as good as you," she said.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd last night warned anyone planning to disrupt the run with violent or unlawful behaviour that authorities would come down on them "like a ton of bricks". He said Australian Federal Police would be solely responsible for security.
Meanwhile, Lin Hatfield-Dodds, head of the Australian Council of Social Service, has pulled out of the torch relay, saying she wanted to make a peaceful protest about human rights.
