The rate of inflation rose for the eighth straight month in June, as the cost of food, travel and insurance services rose as Australia edges closer to total employment.
And the rise will test the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) patience as it heads into its rate-setting monthly board meeting tomorrow, an analyst says.
The TD-Securities/Melbourne Institute inflation gauge rose 0.3 per cent in June for an annual reading of 3.6 per cent, after the prices of food, travel and insurance services rose.
The annual reading is well above the RBA’s target range for inflation between 2 and 3 per cent over the long term.
‘‘This June update offers scant relief,’’ TD securities senior strategist Annette Beacher said.
‘‘Every measure of inflation in this report, be it headline, trimmed mean or excluding volatile items, is printing well above the upper tolerance level of the RBA’s 2 to 3 per cent inflation target band,’’ Ms Beacher said. ‘‘Uncomfortably high inflation should not be particularly surprising since the Australian economy is all-but fully employed, a situation that is likely to remain for quite some time.’’
At the latest official reading, the unemployment rate stood at 5.2 per cent. Economists generally say that when the jobless rate reaches 5 per cent, the nation is fully employed.
Ms Beacher said the figures would not sit well with the RBA, which could raise the official interest rate to help curb demand and restrain price growth.
She said the figures suggested the official consumer price report due on July 28 would show an increase of around 1.0 per cent for the second quarter, lifting the annual pace of inflation to 3.4 per cent. Underlying inflation was forecast to rise by 0.8 percent in the quarter, keeping the annual pace at 3 per cent.
The RBA board is due to meet tomorrow to consider the benchmark cash rate. Most economists expect the Bank to hold the rate steady at 4.5 per cent.
The inflation data showed the rises in the cost of food, travel and insurance prices were offset by falling prices for private motoring, audiovisual and computing equipment and alcohol.
The price of fuel fell 1.5 per cent in the month while rents rose 04 per cent. The trimmed mean of the inflation gauge rose 0.1 per cent in the month, compared to a 0.4 per cent rise in May.
In the 12 months to June, the trimmed mean rate of inflation rose 3.2 per cent. |
