A REFUGEE who fled Sri Lanka after being bashed almost to death two years ago has been killed in a suspected hit and run car accident in Dandenong.

Thiruvadivel Sriskandarajah, 29, was walking with his brother and friends at 8.45am yesterday to catch a bus to Tamil New Year celebrations when he was struck at a pedestrian crossing on Stud Road and killed.
Police arrested the alleged driver in his Mazda four-wheel-drive hours later after tracking him down through signals from his mobile phone.
The Dandenong North man was questioned yesterday afternoon and is expected to be charged with failing to stop at a red light, failing to render assistance, culpable driving and other related offences.
Mr Sriskandarajah, who was born in a war-torn province of northern Sri Lanka, was granted an Australian refugee visa after receiving serious brain and arm injuries in two attacks in his homeland. He still suffered regular fainting spells because of his injuries and was unable to work.
His cousin Karan Mylvaganam said Mr Sriskandarajah was trying to start life afresh in Australia with his parents and siblings, who all lived together in Robert Street, Dandenong, about 400 metres from the accident scene.
"He has cheated death on several occasions but unfortunately today, because of some idiots, he is gone," Mr Mylvaganam said.
"He was a very fun-loving guy, he had just been here two years but knew a lot of people."
Mr Mylvaganam said his cousin spoke little English.
He volunteered regularly for Tamil cultural events and was a devout Hindu. Mr Sriskandarajah and his brother Indrave, 21, were on their way to the Pongal Festival at a temple in Carrum Downs when the accident happened.
Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang followed by wailing and crying as family members rushed to the scene.
Senior Sergeant Michael Talbot of the major collisions unit said police later found the alleged driver, with damage to the front and passenger side of his car, on Huntingdale Road near the Monash Freeway.
Police had been searching an area identified by using signals to mobile phone towers.
The car will undergo forensic examination. |
