还有看到Hilltop_Bear的精华贴,很受感动。

其实本科3年,Master也要两年,等你毕业后找graduate opportunities,感觉缺乏work experience已经有点晚了,在读书的时候,你就因该想尽途径来获取和专业有关的经验了,下面我以accounting的专业来give some hints & tips on gaining some accounting related work experience.

1. CPA Australia has a work experience program during summer holidays, free of charge. It can place you into different companies to gain some valuable accounting work experience. The application is almost 100% success rate, as it is just work experience, you don't get paid. However, many of applicants have managed to gain part-time work afterwords, if the employer was impressed with your performance. The employer will also write you an good reference. Personally I did one work experience for a large manaufacturer (Pepsi) as a management accountant to prepare some budgets and variance analysis; the other one was with a chartible organisation, for ther FBT return and management reports. So it is highly recommendable to join in CPA Australia as a student member as soon as you enrolled in an accounting related degree.

2. The Institute of Chartered Accountant Australia (ICAA) has similar program with accounting firms and banks, however they are all paid work experience, and therefore you need to go through proper interview and are more competitive. There is also an overeseas working experience program available during summer holiday. So you get combine a holiday & work experience together and trip is fully funded by the employer. However, overseas working experience program is extremely hard to obtain, personally I missed out at the final round of interview . However, it is also recommended to join ICAA as a student member as soon as you commenced an accounting related degree.

3. All universities have Career Centres which can assist you with your career planning, such as writing up your resume, cover letters and interview techniques etc. However there is also a Casual Employment Services Centre, which is often overlooked by many students. While many of the jobs may be labour based and minimum skills required such as child care, telemarketing, waitering, however from  time to time, there is always some jobs are interesting and related to your profession, and you will get paid if you are successful in the interview. The entry level for these jobs is relatively low, because they want to recruit students. So always keep close eyes on these career/casual job notices board, as I believe many of these jobs are posted online through universities website, UTS/Sydney Uni has one for example.

4. There is an organisation called Volunteer Australia, which always need people with different professions to volunteer. I believe Macquarie Uni for example, has incorproated this as part of their graduation requirements for some degrees. Employers place applicants with these experience highly on their recruitment radar as proper paid work experience, it is a very 'Australian' way of making contributions towards society. It is definitely worthwhile to investigate.

5. Many big firms especially services oriented firms (such as law firms, accounting firms, investment banks, management consultants) have summer clerkship, internship during the uni holidays, while it is very competitive, but it does not hurt to give a try. I was lucky enough to get into Anderson Consulting (now Accenture) for their Leadership Program.

6. Also, actively participated in different activities in Universities (such as Clubs and Societies) can be very beneficial, as well as tutoring & computer lab assistant opportunties, many employer value your extra-curricular activities, because many of soft skills such as organisation, communication, teamwork and leadership can be developed from running clubs and societies. Personally I was heavily involved in one or two club societies and organisation in my uni days, well 5 years in uni, you probably have to be involved.

7. It is worthwhile to do a MYOB course & Tax preparation course during your semester breaks. MYOB has a student version package which is free to download, many universities have for example, incorporated MYOB as part of their accounting degree requirement, even if it's not case, it is worthwhile to do a MYOB course through a TAFE or external education/training provider. Tax preparation course is provided by ITP, HR&Block and Alpha Tax. Not only it is very useful for your own benefits (almost everyone has to prepare tax return) to gain some hands-on experience on tax, but more importantly, many of these courses offer you a job after you successfully complete it and achieve great grades. After I completed ITP course in Hurstivlle, came 1st in the class, I was successful to secure a weekend job with ITP Miranda office, I did hundreds of tax returns for 1998-1999 tax return season. Those days we do everything via hand (no tax software available). I still can boost to people that I can do a tax return with pen, paper, a calculator and set of tables. Three of my friends managed to gain full time employment through ITP and Alpha Tax, which they used as a jumping board (aftter a couple of years) to land their 2nd/3rd accounting firm jobs afterwords. MYOB & Tax preparation courses are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED & Tax deductible.

8. You should actively go to career fairs, career presentations, job-searching & networking seminars whenever you can. So you know the latest graduate/ undergraduate job opportunities, as well as learning some hints and tips on the recruitment/application process.

9. We live in an information world, if you know something other people don't you have an competitive andvantage. So register your CV early with one of reputable online recruitment agents as soon as practical, you never know when will you be headhuntered, make sure constantly update your online CV with latest experience, education, and personal details. There are also dedicated websites for graduate recruitment, for example Seek has dedicated graduate sections, CareerOne as well, there is also a site called Gradlink (or Graudatelink), etc. ICAA produces an Accounting Work Experience Guide every year which is very useful, you get a copy as part of student membership. Graduate Link produces a booklet called Graudate Opportunties which give you a brief description of the employer, application open and close dates, contact details, employer website. I religiously got a latest copy since 2nd year of uni onwards and read them like a career bible.

10. Get to know more people in your profession, especially those already working in your profession, make them your friends and mentors. You never know, they may refer some great working opportunties to you. Be the so called "accounting guru" among your friends and relatives, they may refer some ad hoc tax/book-keeping work to you. While it is true only tax agents can charge fees for providing tax advices, but it never stops accountants to charge people for bookkeeping fees. Quicken/MYOB/Cash Manager/ATO's eTax & Record Keeping Software can be your starting point for some book-keeping services, perhaps even do a bookkeeping course will be very beneficial. A lot accountants start with book-keeping services before they move on to big and better opportunties. You will be surprised how much some people is willing to pay for a good bookkeeper.

On a side note, personally I think it is an EXPLOITATION to ask STUDENTS to PAY a few THOUSAND DOLLARS to gain some accounting work experience, I know this is common among some Chinese accounting firms. I think it is definitely costly to train people up, therefore I understand why some of the work experience is done with no remuneration initially for a few weeks. However the idea that you have to PAY to get some of these experience, while you stil have to do the work for free is Absolutely Ourageous. This explains the high staff turnover for these firms. One of fundamental ethics for either a CPA or CA, is to charge clients fairly for the professional services you provide. I think the same courtesy should be extended to your employees. Also, Australia has minimum wage protection in place, free services (include training & learning) should be limited to 2-4 weeks maximum, then you should get paid at least with minimum award wage/salaries for the services you provide, the more experienced you get, the more you should get paid.

尤其是像Accounting,IT(Programming) 这种工作,很多强调的就是attention to details. PLEASE CHECK your spelling and grammar carefully, read it out loud/review it yourself; better still, have a friend/expert to go through your resume independently. If a professional looking resume can land you a dream job, you probably think this is the best investment you ever made.

(Personal Information/Details)

Given Names:
Surname:
Preferred Names: (if you have one, this normally referred as your English/Christian name).
Address: (Postal + Residential)
Telephone: Home &/ Office (if you have a direct number)
Mobile:
Email:Work/Personal email
Date/Place of Birth: Optional,
Residency: PR/Citizen
Language: English and Chinese (Cantonese/Mandarin) – fluent spoken and written
For example: Work as an Accountant for a public practice firm; Study to become a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA)
(Extra-curricular Activities),for example, Photography, Badminton, Property Investment, Chinese Chess, Reading, Movies, etc.
Attained Qualification: Optional, 概括你的学历,for example: Chartered Accountant (CA, Graduate Diploma), 2007, ICAA; Bachelor of Commerce – Major in Professional Accounting, 2003, University of Technology, Sydney; High School Certificate, 2000, Burwood Girls
Computer Skills: This section is mainly designed for non-IT applicants, Microsoft Office, MYOB, Handisoft, Lotus Notes, Great Plains,SAP,Oracle,Typing Speed: 60 words per minute.

To apply, integrate and further enhance my business knowledge, professional expertise and personal skills gained from work experiences and university as an accounting or tax professional, and make significant contributions to the success of my employed organisation.

Period (工龄: From MM/Year – MM/Year; 现在的工作就写From MM/Year – Present)
Job Title: (职称: Senior Tax Consultant; Accountant, etc.)
Roles & Responsibilities: (重之又重, 其实很多好的Template都可以从Job Description 和你的Performance Review上抄下来, bullet point is perfectly fine to use here)
Key Customers: (Optional: 适合比较大的会计,IT公司, 有机会直接和客户打交道).
Reason for leaving: (离职原因: 有些HR想知道这些,但个人觉得没必要,可以interview的时候再谈)

Typical Accounting Resume,
  • General Bookkeeping, Journal Leger Entry
  • Preparing Company, Partnership, Superannuation Fund, Individual Tax Return
  • Preparing Financial Report, Profit and Loss Statement and Balance Sheet
  • Account Receivable and Payable, Payroll
  • Auditing Experience
  • Problem solving, Communicate with customers
  • Telephone manner
  • Hindi Soft, MYOB
  • Varieties clients, Industry involves Wholesales and Retail Trades, Telecommunications, Travel Agents, Real Estate etc. Major client’s turnover around 5 Million.

  • Experienced with A/R, A/P, Payroll, Bank Reconciliation, etc.
  • Experienced with financial report preparation.
  • Experienced with data collection and data processing.
  • Experienced with GST return, BAS and PAYG return.
  • Skillful with office softwares, MYOB accounting.

俺的感觉就是写得也太简单,太笼统了,not enough meat on the bone.

ACCOUNTING/TAX COMPLIANCE
  • Prepare and review accounts and income tax returns for some of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that include travel agents, real estates, telecommunication/ mobile companies, various wholesalers and retailers, etc. Major clients have turnover exceeding $5million.
  • The type of income tax return includes Company, Superannuation, Trusts, Partnership and Individuals.
  • Audit and review works in some Financial Accounts and Self-Managed Superannuation Fund.
  • Prepare and process monthly accounts journals including accounts receivable, accounts payable, expenses and revenues.
  • Prepare half yearly and yearly set of accounts and financial reports that consist of General Ledger, Trial Balance, Statement of Financial Positions, Statement of Financial Performance and Cash flow Statements, disclosure notes, year-end adjustments and other associated working papers for the financial statements.
  • Skillfully use Microsoft Office (especially Excel, Word), MYOB and HandiSoft accounting software to collect, enter, process, analyse and produce useful financial information and income tax returns for both compliance and management requirements.
  • GST compliance work, i.e. ABN Registration, prepare and process monthly or quarterly BAS/IAS Returns.
  • Company secretary and compliance work, includes setting up companies, SMSFs, trusts for year-end planning work and ongoing corporate compliance and reporting works
  • Other general accounting duties including bookkeeping, payroll, superannuation, bank reconciliation and petty cash.

BUSINESS/TAX CONSULTING
  • Provide structuring and planning advisory works to SME clients, superfund and high net worth individuals.
  • General CGT, FBT, GST, Transactional and International Taxes advisory work on ad hoc basis.
  • Superannuation, tax and other legal research, general tax problems solving for clients and some due diligence investigation works.
  • Tax administration work, including liaison with ATO, ASIC, APRA, other government regulatory bodies, other financial and investment institutions.
  • Customer liaison both over the phone and in person to assist them with their general business inquiries and resolve their business problems.

Turnover increased by X%, Profit lifted by X%, 等, 但是internal customer satisfaction is still a great achievement. Some of the good examples of achievement may include the following:
  • Billable hours (time you can charge on to clients) and recoverability constantly exceed 85%, one of the highest among the peers and colleagues, with minimal write-offs.
  • Promote efficient, innovative and productive work practices by improving on existing workflow, making recommendation to the processes and procedures, so staff’s time can be better utilised for chargeable work rather than administrative inefficiencies.
  • Foster team-oriented work environment and contribute valuable ideas/opinions to the work teams and listen/respond to other team members' views.
  • Established trust and developed relationships with clients based on service responsiveness, and proven track record to gain high customer satisfaction through proactive approach to address client’s concerns and achieving the desired outcomes.

Mobile Phone Salesman (Part-time basis), Duties include:
•        Customer Services
•        General shop duties
•        Phone enquiries

  • Constantly achieve or exceed weekly sales target
  • Cashier using computer register; till balance, reconciliation and other cashflow management;
  • Listen to customers concerns first, understand their needs, then apply detailed product/services knowledge, and provide satisfactory mobile plans and phones with just the right features and functionalities that can not only meet their business or personal purposes, but also within their budget.
  • Troubleshoot any technical issues with phones and mobile accessories.
  • Clear explanation of pros and cons of various mobile plans, always try to seek the best possible deals for the customer that is both cost effective and meet their requirement.
  • Answer all customer queries and resolve customer complaints both on the phone and over the counter.
  • General shop duties and maintenance

(Major in Accounting and Finance); Average Grades (High Credits average, or Distinction average);
  • Participated in Microsoft Office 2007 Product Launch Conference 2007
  • CPA Program (how many modules completed, when do you expect to finish in 2008).
  • ITP Taxation Training Course conducted by Income Tax Professionals and scored a distinction (2004)
  • MYOB Training Certificate (September 2002, Honsby College).
  • Constantly seeking opportunities (including self-learning) to enhance and update my professional (in the areas of Accounting and Taxation) knowledge, skills and other personal development.

第四部分:Other, Communities Involvements, Extracurricular Activities, 举例: graduate applicants, should spend some time here to mention you membership, clubs and societies, some hobbies and interests, etc.
•        Member of Institute of Chartered Accountant Australia
•        Member of Australia Society of Certified Practice Accountants
•        Member of the Tax Institute of Australia
•        Founding Member of Australian Chinese Professional Association (ACPA)
•        Member of Chinese Christian Group at particular suburb
•        Organizer of the badminton club 2003 – Present
•        UNICEF/World Vision Sponsor 2001 – Present
•        Life member of Sydney University Union and Sports Union
•        Treasurer of AYBC (Asia-Australia Youth Business Council) in Sydney University,
•        Member of CASS (Chartered Accountant Student Society), 1996-2000;
•        Member of FMAA (Financial Management Association of Australian Ltd), 1996-2000;
•        Student Member of Accounting Society, Economics Society and Law Society, 1996-2000

第二部分之前,可以提一下Soft Skills, 如leadership, teamwork, communication, ability to do multi-tasks, 等等.

Personal Details 1页
Education 1页
Other + Reference 1页
Work Experience/Employment History 2

但是还是有不同的,nothing better than some real examples。

IT Skills & Competencies!
