Risk of Colon Cancer Death Reduced with Healthy Lifestyle
Researchers say people treated for colon cancer can greatly reduce their risk of death and of the cancer progressing, by living more healthfully.

The study was released just before the yearly gathering of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the world's largest organization of clinical cancer professionals.

Harvard University in Massachusetts questioned 1,000 advanced colon cancer patients across the United States. Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) examined their answers.

The researchers began examining the volunteers at 13 medical centers between 1999 and 2001. The patients were followed for seven years.

Strollin Through A Colon
Strollin Through A Colon
Twice during the study, they were asked if their lifestyle followed prevention suggestions from the American Cancer Society. These guidelines include keeping a healthy weight, eating many fruits and vegetables, limiting intake of red and processed meats and exercising on a regular basis.

Only nine percent of the patients in the study followed the guidelines. Those patients had a 42 percent lower risk of death compared to the patients who did not follow the guidelines. The risk of a return of the cancer was also 31 percent lower among the group that followed the guidelines. In the study, colon cancer returned in 335 patients, 256 of whom died from the disease.

Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death.

Erin Van Blarigan of UCSF was the lead investigator. She said people who are treated for colon cancer are living longer than ever before. But she says many more can survive colon cancer if they begin living a healthy lifestyle after identification and treatment of the disease.

Alcohol Increases, Exercise Decreases Breast Cancer Risk
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Hundreds of thousands of new cases are identified worldwide every year.

Now, one of the largest cancer prevention studies of its kind has reported some sobering findings. Just one alcoholic drink a day can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. But, the researchers also found there are things people can do to reduce their risk.

The American Institute for Cancer Research did the study. It examined 119 past studies involving 12 million women. 260,000 of them had breast cancer.

Anne McTiernan was the lead writer of the report. McTiernan is with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington.

She said the research showed a connection between drinking alcohol and increased risk of breast cancer in 10 studies involving 4,000 women. The women were of childbearing age and had developed breast cancer.

The study found that the women who drank about 10 grams of alcohol a day had a five percent increased risk of breast cancer.

Although five percent seems like a small amount, the study's chance of mistake was very low, said McTiernan.

FILE - An exercise group works in front of a bust of Benjamin Franklin at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Feb. 10, 2017.
FILE - An exercise group works in front of a bust of Benjamin Franklin at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Feb. 10, 2017.
Another group of studies involved 35,000 women who were post-menopausal and had developed breast cancer.

"We found that there was a nine percent increased risk of drinking that same amount of alcohol, an average of 10 grams a day of alcohol. Again, a small glass of wine, eight ounce(s) of beer, one ounce of hard liquor."

McTiernan said the World Health Organization considers alcohol to be a carcinogen – a substance that can cause cancer. It contains a liquid called acetaldehyde, which damages DNA.

Investigators also found ways to lower risk. They say forceful exercise, such as running or fast bicycling, decreased the risk of breast cancer. Young women who were the most physically active had about a 17 percent decrease. A 10 percent decrease was found for post-menopausal women who took part in similar exercise.

Moderate activity, such as walking and gardening, was found to reduce the risk of breast cancer by 13 percent in the most active women compared to the least active.

There was also evidence that eating a non-starchy, plant-based diet lowers the risk. However, that does not mean people must eat only vegetables, McTiernan said.

"It just means eating a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit: making sure most of the vegetables are non-starchy, not potatoes; eating dairy products because they are high in calcium and they have some benefit on their own."

McTiernan said eating a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables can help women keep their weight down. That is important, since being overweight can increase an older woman's breast cancer risk.

The Institute says one in three breast cancer cases in the U.S. could be prevented if women cut alcohol from their diets, stayed physically active and kept a healthy weight.

The American Institute for Cancer Research is part of the World Cancer Research Fund, which collects and studies information from around the world on cancer prevention.

Mental Training Helped Elderly Stay Sharp for Years
From VOA Learning English, this is the Health Report.

Some kinds of mental skills naturally decrease as people get older. Yet research seems to show that some training can improve such skills. A recently published study also appears to demonstrate that the good effects of training can last for many years after that training has ended.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland wanted to learn how long memory and thinking skills would last in older people who trained to keep them. The people were part of a ten-year research project. They were taught methods meant to improve their memory, thinking and ability to perform everyday tasks.

More than 2,800 volunteered for the study called ACTIVE - short for Advanced (Cognitive) Training for Independent and Vital Elderly. Most started when they were more than 70 years old.

Mental Training Helped Elderly Stay Sharp for Years
A brain workout is just as important as a body workout. (Seniors in Japan staying healthy.)
The volunteers took one of several short training classes meant to help them keep their mental abilities. One class trained participants in skills including how to remember word lists. Another group trained in reasoning. A third group received help with speed-of-processing - speed of receiving and understanding information. A fourth group - the control group did not get any training.

Earlier results had established that the training helped the participants for up to five years. Now, lead study writer George Rebok says, the research showed most of the training remained effective a full ten years later.

Professor Rebok and his team found that the people trained in reasoning and speed-of-processing did better on tests than the control group.

"We were wondering whether those effects would endure over time and would still be there ten years following the training, and in fact, that's exactly what we found."

The effect on memory, however, seemed not to last as long. Still, the older people in any of the three classes generally reported less difficulty in performing daily activities than the control group. The total training time for the older people was between 10 and 15 hours.

Professor Rebok and his team are now considering ways to provide such training for lower cost.

"We are trying to make the training more broadly available. For example, we have a grant right now from the National Institute on Aging to try to make a web-based version of the ACTIVE memory training and put then the training online."

One question still to be studied is how only a few hours of training can still be effective after ten years. The study appears in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Lesson Forty-one Penny's bag
Question:Who is the tin of  tobacco for?
Text:
Is that bag heavy,Penny.
No very.
Here.
Put it no this chair.
What's in it ?
A piece of cheese
A loaf of bread.
A bar of soap.
A bar of chocolate.
A bottle of mike.
A pound of sugar.
Half a pound of coffee.
A quarter of a pound of  tea.
And  a tin of tobacco.
Is that tin of tobacco for me?
Well,it's not certainly for me.

仔细看,在每种食物的前面都没有定冠词A 或the,而是一些短语,
表达一块 A piece of,一条 A  bar of ,一瓶 A bottle of ,一磅 a pound of ,半磅 half a pound of ,一听 A tin of
因为 cheese,bread,soap,chocolate,Mike,sugar,coffee,tea,tobacco
这些词都是不可数名词。

还有一个单词会经常用到,从澳洲回国经常带奶粉,不是 mike 而是 Mike powder。

From VOA Learning English, this is the Health & Lifestyle report.

People have long known that nuts are part of a healthy diet. However, scientists in the Netherlands recently found that you do not need to eat many to get all the health benefits.

The researchers found that eating a handful of nuts or peanuts every day is linked to a lower risk of death from several major diseases.

In this 2013 file photo, an Indian worker holds walnuts at a market on the outskirts of Jammu, India. India is a major producer of walnuts along with China, Iran and the U.S.  (AP Photo/Channi Anand)
In this 2013 file photo, an Indian worker holds walnuts at a market on the outskirts of Jammu, India. India is a major producer of walnuts along with China, Iran and the U.S. (AP Photo/Channi Anand)
Piet van den Brandt, a professor of epidemiology at Maastricht University, led the research. He says that eating nuts protects the health of both men and women.

"Nut intake seemed to be protective for both men and women, and that was on total mortality – any cause of death."

Professor van den Brandt adds that you do not need as many nuts as health experts earlier suggested.

"What we found is that the beneficial effect(s) of nuts and peanuts is already apparent at a lot lower levels of intake than has been suggested before."

About 10 grams a day is enough to get the full health benefits of nuts. That is about an average-sized handful.

Nuts are high in fat and calories. So, eating a handful before dinner can help you to eat less. But eating too many can ruin your appetite altogether.

However, the researchers found that many peanut butters did not give the same health benefits as plain peanuts. That is because most peanut butters contain added oils and sugars.

Also, when choosing which nuts to eat, avoid those stored or roasted in oil. Dry-roasted is better but still the high temperatures can kill the healthy nutrients. Nuts are most healthy if you eat them raw.

Not all nuts are created equal

Nuts differ in their fat and nutrient content.

Almonds are among the least fatty nuts. Almonds also have calcium and are high in Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps to protect the body from disease. And it's good for skin and eyes.

Chestnuts are the nut with the least fat and fewest calories. Chestnuts are rich in carbohydrates and fiber. And in their raw form, chestnuts are a good source of vitamin C. Roasted chestnuts are a popular treat in the winter.

If you do not eat meat, cashews are a good substitute. Cashews have lots of protein and minerals, like iron and zinc. They also have the mineral magnesium, which may help to improve memory.

Walnuts are loaded with antioxidants, compounds that may help protect against cancer. They are also loaded with heart-friendly fats and omega-3s. So, walnuts are a good choice for people who do not eat fish.

Pecans are good if you want to feel less tired and pistachios can help balance your hormone levels.
